The key facts

  • Jeddah Tower (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) — design height of at least 1,000 m, about 167 floors; once completed, a new world height record is expected.
  • Burj Azizi (Dubai, UAE) — 725 m, being built by Azizi Developments on the site of the cancelled Entisar Tower project.
  • The list includes only sites where construction has already begun; projects still preparing their sites or suspended were not counted.

A kilometre-high tower is set to overtake the Burj Khalifa

The publication Kun.uz has published a ranking of the seven tallest buildings, currently under construction, arranged by design height in descending order. The list is topped by the Jeddah Tower in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) — previously known as the Kingdom Tower, it is designed to be at least 1,000 metres tall with roughly 167 floors. Once completed, the tower is expected to surpass the Burj Khalifa and set a new world record for building height.

The centre of a new urban district

The Jeddah Tower is conceived as the centrepiece of the future Jeddah Economic City complex: beyond its role as a standalone building, it is a key part of the project to develop a new urban area. The publication notes that building supertall structures today serves not only to realise architectural ideas, but also to attract investment to cities, create new business centres and showcase countries' engineering capabilities.

Burj Azizi in Dubai — second on the list

In second place is the 725-metre Burj Azizi in Dubai (UAE) on Sheikh Zayed Road. Named after the developer Azizi Developments, the tower is set to become one of the city's tallest and most prominent buildings. The 725-metre figure is the second-greatest height among completed and under-construction buildings after the Burj Khalifa, but Burj Azizi's final place in the world ranking will depend, in particular, on when the Jeddah Tower is completed. The tower is being built on the site of the previously planned Entisar Tower: the cancelled project by Meydan envisaged a 570-metre building with 122 floors.

What is important to keep in mind

The list covers only sites where construction work has already begun: projects where the site is merely being prepared or work has been suspended are not included. This means the final hierarchy of heights may change — both because of the completion timelines of each building and because of projects not yet on the list.
