Meeting in Astana on AI security

King Abdullah II of Jordan has flown to Kazakhstan to co-chair, together with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, a meeting devoted to security challenges related to artificial intelligence. The session is scheduled for Friday in Astana and will be held within the framework of the Aqaba Process — an initiative launched by Abdullah in 2015 to strengthen international cooperation against terrorism and extremism. According to the agency Anadolu , citing the Royal Court, world leaders and international officials are expected to attend.

Bilateral agenda and format

In addition to the main meeting, bilateral talks between Abdullah and Tokayev are planned during the two-day visit. The press secretary of the President of Kazakhstan, Aibek Smadiyarov, said the discussion will focus on expanding trade, investment and economic cooperation, as well as strengthening cultural and humanitarian ties — according to the state agency Kazinform.

Context of the initiative

The Aqaba Process serves as a platform for countries and international organizations to respond to emerging security threats and coordinate counterterrorism efforts. Previous meetings were held in Jordan, the United Kingdom, Spain, Albania, Indonesia, Italy, Brazil, Bulgaria and the United States. In addition, in October, during a visit to Australia, Abdullah welcomed that country's interest in hosting an Aqaba Process meeting in 2027 dedicated to countering online extremism and the misuse of new technologies. The AI theme at the Astana meeting continues this shift in the initiative's agenda from classic counterterrorism to threats associated with new technologies.
