Election Victory
American politician Nathan Johnson, a member of the Democratic Party, won the election for Attorney General of Texas held on November 3, 2026. According to his campaign, he received about 52.3% of the vote, while his Republican rival Mayes Middleton got roughly 46%. Johnson became the first Democrat elected to this office in 32 years; Variety reports on the outcome of the race, as cited by Life.ru.
From Music to Law
Before entering politics, Johnson was professionally involved in music: by his own account, he composed soundtracks for 67 episodes of the cult anime Dragon Ball Z and five feature films of the franchise. The composer recalled that while working on the anime, his young son watched what was happening on screen with delight, and he himself described the experience as a chance to become part of popular culture. He then focused on a legal career, handling litigation and mediation in conflict resolution.
Political Career and Plans
In 2018, Johnson won a seat in the Texas Senate and, starting in January 2019, represented part of Dallas County in the state legislature. During his years of legislative work, he dealt with healthcare, education, energy, and criminal justice issues; according to his campaign, he participated in the passage of more than a hundred laws despite the Republican majority in the state senate. After his victory, Johnson promised to focus on consumer protection, fighting corruption, and enforcing the law, rather than turning the attorney general's office into a constant political battleground.
Context: A Shift in Texas
Johnson's victory was part of broader changes in the political balance of power in Texas. As Life.ru previously reported, in the same election, Democrat Gina Ortiz Jones defeated Republican Greg Abbott, who had led the state for three consecutive terms, and will become the first Democratic governor of Texas since 1995. In addition, Democrat James Talarico won the U.S. Senate race from the state, beating Republican Ken Paxton.
