New agreement until 2029
Bayern Munich officially announced on November 5 that it had extended striker Harry Kane's contract until June 30, 2029. The 33-year-old forward's previous agreement ran until the summer of 2027, meaning the new one is a two-year extension. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, as cited by Life.ru, the player will earn about 25 million euros per season before taxes, which could make him the highest-paid player in Europe in terms of guaranteed salary.
What lies behind the extension
AFP notes that talks about the extension had been ongoing since August, and according to German media, the main sticking point was precisely the length of the agreement. Kane himself said in the club's statement that he feels 'at home' in Munich, spoke highly of the team and head coach Vincent Kompany, and added that his whole family is happy in the city. Bayern's sporting director Christoph Freund called the extension a reason for 'absolute joy' and described Kane as 'the best all-round striker in the world.' According to AFP, in August the player told FourFourTwo magazine that his desire to return to the Premier League had noticeably faded.
Statistics and the Ballon d'Or
Kane has been playing for the Munich side since the summer of 2023, when he moved from London's Tottenham. In that time he has scored 156 goals in 161 official matches, won the German championship twice and lifted the domestic cup, Life.ru recalls. At the end of October the striker received the Ballon d'Or — the award for the world's best footballer — and became the first Englishman in 25 years to win the prize. AFP specifies: he became the first Englishman since Michael Owen (2001) and the first Bayern player since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (1981) to win the award, edging out France captain Kylian Mbappé, who finished second. In September Kane also became the fastest player in Bundesliga history to reach the 100-goal mark — in 98 matches, breaking Dieter Müller's 1977 record by 31 games.
Season context
According to AFP, last season Kane scored 61 goals for Bayern and 12 for England — 73 in total; only Lionel Messi in the 2011/12 season (82 goals) surpassed that figure in the 21st century. Bayern then won the double of the Bundesliga and the German Cup, but in the Champions League semi-final lost to the eventual winner, Paris Saint-Germain, 5:6 on aggregate. This season the Munich side are the only unbeaten team among Europe's top leagues: they lead the Bundesliga, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference, and sit 13th in the overall Champions League standings after four of the eight rounds of the league phase.
