The record held since 1969 has been broken
Russian fishermen have broken the historic record for Pacific herring catch. According to the Federal Agency for Fishery's Industry Monitoring and Communications Center (CSMS), over the first ten months of 2026 the catch of this fish in the Far East exceeded 612 thousand tons, reported the industry organization 'Fish Union'. The previous annual record — 606 thousand tons, set in 1969 — has been officially broken.
How far the result exceeds the historical norm
The current catch volume is already 2.7 times higher than the average annual figure over 90 years of observations, which stands at 228 thousand tons. According to the Fish Union, from 1935 to 2025 Far Eastern fishermen caught between 4 thousand tons of herring in 1935 and 606 thousand tons in 1969 annually. By the end of 2026, the industry expects to finally set a new historic maximum.
Context: fleet renewal
Life.ru previously reported that Vladimir Putin inspected the modern fishing trawler 'Kapitan Yunak' in Vladivostok. The vessel is designed to catch and process up to 60 thousand tons of fish annually — roughly 2.5 times more than the trawlers that form the backbone of the Far Eastern fishing fleet. On board there is a processing plant where the crew produces finished products right at sea. According to the statement quoted by the outlet, the President spoke about Indonesia's interest in the Russian fishing fleet.
