The key facts

  • Carpets in the hallway and living room should be vacuumed 2–3 times a week, and daily when pets are shedding
  • For short pile, suction of 15–20 thousand Pa is enough; for long pile and homes with pets, from 20 thousand Pa
  • Washing vacuums and steam cleaners can damage pile carpets if the manufacturer does not permit such treatment

How often to vacuum depends on the room and your pets

Dreame manager Mao Chengzu, in a conversation with Gazeta.Ru, explained how to properly care for carpets to preserve their appearance and extend their lifespan. According to him, the frequency of cleaning depends on where the carpet is located, its material, pile length, and whether there are pets in the home. He recommended vacuuming carpets in the hallway and living room two to three times a week, and daily in case of heavy soiling or pet shedding; in a rarely used bedroom, cleaning about once a week is enough.

Why dust wears out the pile

According to the specialist, small particles gradually penetrate deep into the pile, and when walking they increase friction and wear on the fibers — as a result, the carpet loses its color and becomes flattened. If dirt is not removed for a long time, regular cleaning may no longer be enough. When stains appear, the expert advises immediately blotting the liquid with a clean cloth without rubbing it, testing the cleaning product on an inconspicuous area, and after wet treatment drying the carpet completely to avoid odor and mold. For stubborn stains, he recommended turning to professional cleaning services.

How to choose a vacuum cleaner for your carpet type

According to Chengzu, the choice of equipment depends on the type of carpet. For short pile, upright vacuums and robots with suction power of about 15–20 thousand Pa are suitable; for long pile and homes with pets, models from 20 thousand Pa; at the same time, effectiveness depends not only on this figure but also on airflow and brush design. For short and medium pile, turbo brushes that pick up hair and fur work well, while for delicate natural, loop-pile, and long-pile carpets, attachments without a rotating roller or with the option to switch it off are better. The expert warned against using washing vacuums and steam cleaners on pile carpets unless the carpet manufacturer permits such treatment: steam exposure can damage the material. Part of everyday care can be delegated to a robot vacuum, paying attention to carpet recognition, automatic suction boost, fringe protection, and preventing wet attachments from coming into contact with the carpet.
