The key facts

  • A new accident occurred at energy facilities outside Crimea but affected the peninsula's power grid
  • Electricity supply restrictions have been introduced and restoration work is underway
  • Earlier, disruptions affected Simferopol, Yalta, Kerch, Saki, Yevpatoria and a number of districts, as well as trolleybuses and mobile communications in Simferopol

New accident and electricity supply restrictions

Crimea has once again faced power supply disruptions: this time the damage occurred at energy facilities outside the peninsula, but the consequences affected the local power grid. The new accident was reported by Oleg Kryuchkov, advisor to the head of the Republic of Crimea: 'A new accident in the power grid outside Crimea. Restoration work is underway.' In connection with the incident, electricity supply restrictions have been introduced on the peninsula, and specialists have begun fixing the fault. Kryuchkov's statement did not give a timeline for the full restoration of power supply — while repair work continues, the restrictions remain in place.

What is known about the previous disruptions

This is not the first accident in a short period: earlier, according to Life.ru, several cities and districts of Crimea faced massive power supply disruptions due to damage to high-voltage networks. Left without electricity or with limited supply were Simferopol, Yalta, Kerch, Saki, Yevpatoria and a number of districts of the peninsula; in some settlements outage schedules were introduced. The accident also affected the operation of trolleybuses in Simferopol and mobile communications; power engineers directed capacity primarily to socially significant facilities.

Appeal to residents

The authorities urged residents to treat the situation with understanding and not to spread unverified information about the scale of the accident and the timeline for eliminating its consequences. 'We ask you to remain calm and trust verified sources of information,' the advisor to the head of Crimea said in an address to residents. The publication did not report the exact number of settlements affected by the new accident, or whether the current restrictions repeat the previous outage schedules.
