The key facts

  • The Democrats won both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections, taking the narrow majority from the Republicans
  • Babiš predicts impeachments and vetoes, calling the situation 'a certain paralysis'
  • The Prime Minister hopes Trump will return to his promise to end the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz

The Czech Prime Minister's assessment

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said he expects political paralysis in the United States following the Democratic Party's victory in the midterm elections. According to him, until the end of Donald Trump's presidential term the country will face repeated impeachment attempts and vetoes of legislation. He told this to journalists before departing for talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, as reported by the Czech outlet Echo24, citing a publication by Anadolu.

What changed in Congress

As a result of Tuesday's elections, the Democrats gained control of both chambers of Congress — the House of Representatives and the Senate — whereas previously the Republicans had narrow majorities in both chambers. This is expected to give the Democrats more opportunities to block Trump's legislative agenda. Babiš noted that the results matched his expectations, but called the Democrats' victory significant: according to him, the Republican stronghold of Texas 'fell', and in a number of places the Democrats won Senate seats for the first time in decades.

Babiš's predictions and hopes

Babiš believes it will be harder for Trump to advance his policies after the shift in the balance of power in Congress, but he added: 'President Trump will, of course, continue to do whatever he wants.' He also expressed the hope that Trump would return to his promise to end the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz region. It should be noted that the assessment of 'paralysis' is the Czech Prime Minister's personal prediction, not an established fact: the publication does not describe any specific steps the Democrats will take in the new composition of Congress.
