The key facts
- In a single day, the coalition announced two drone interceptions — in the Eastern Province and in the Mecca area
- Who launched the drones, as well as any casualties or damage, was not reported
- The day before, the coalition announced the interception of a ballistic missile and two Houthi drones
Two interceptions in one day
The Saudi Arabia-led military coalition said on Tuesdaythat it had intercepted and destroyed a drone in the kingdom's Eastern Province. This was the second such announcement of the day: earlier the same day, coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki wrote on X (a social network owned by an American company) that another drone had been shot down over the Mecca region in the west of the country. In neither case did the coalition say who had launched the aircraft, nor did it report any casualties or damage.
Context of the confrontation
The day before, on Monday, the coalition announced the interception of a ballistic missile and two drones launched by the Houthi group from Yemen toward Saudi territory. According to Anadolu, the interceptions come amid an escalation between the Houthis and the coalition, which backs the internationally recognized government of Yemen. The Saudi Arabia-led coalition has been conducting military operations against the Houthis since March 2015 — after the group seized Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and part of the country in 2014.
