Liu Shaoyun, former chairman of the board of the Chinese airline China Eastern Airlines, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for taking bribes totaling more than 67.5 million yuan (about 10 million dollars). The first-instance court of the city of Shenyang issued this decision, CCTV News reported, as cited by Kun.uz.

What the court established

In addition to imprisonment, the court fined Liu Shaoyun 4 million yuan (about 600 thousand dollars). The illegally obtained funds, along with the interest accrued on them, were confiscated and turned over to the state treasury. According to the investigation, from 2002 to 2023, while holding senior positions at China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines, he helped organizations and individuals with running their businesses, concluding contracts, and managing air routes in exchange for rewards.

Mitigating circumstances

When handing down the verdict, the court took into account that after his detention Liu Shaoyun confessed to his crimes, disclosed to the investigation circumstances previously unknown to it, admitted his guilt, expressed remorse, and returned the illegally obtained funds.
