Quarterly profit despite declining revenue
On Tuesday, BioNTech released its third-quarter report: net profit came in at €184.5 million ($206.5 million), compared with a net loss of €28.7 million a year earlier, Anadolu reports. Operating profit reached €125 million after an operating loss of €46.9 million in the same period last year, while diluted earnings per share came to €0.73 versus a loss of €0.12.
What helped the company return to profit
Revenue for July–September nevertheless fell 15.1% year on year to €1.29 billion, as global demand for COVID-19 vaccines continues to weaken. The return to profitability was helped by lower legal expenses: other operating costs dropped to €163.6 million from €729.5 million a year earlier, when the company recorded large one-off write-downs related to litigation.
2026 guidance raised
The company raised the lower end of its full-year 2026 revenue guidance: it now expects €1.7–1.9 billion, up from the previous lower bound of €1.6 billion. In this way, BioNTech backed up its improved quarterly results with a more optimistic view of the year as a whole, despite the ongoing decline in COVID vaccine revenue.
Rising research costs and a nine-month loss
Research and development expenses rose 32.5% to €748.1 million as clinical trials of cancer treatments advanced. The company aims to bring several oncology products to market by 2030, reducing its dependence on COVID-19 vaccines. Meanwhile, over the first nine months of 2026, BioNTech's net loss widened to €1.17 billion from €831.1 million a year earlier, while revenue for the period fell to €1.51 billion from €1.96 billion — meaning the quarterly profit has not yet reversed the negative trend on a full-year horizon.
