The key facts
- According to expert Knutov, 'waiting drones' are now placed directly on roads rather than in grass, trees or rooftops
- The device may be equipped with a motion sensor or microphone and look like an ordinary downed drone
- Earlier, the head of the Kakhovka district reported explosive devices packed with hryvnia banknotes
Traps on the roadway
A 'downed' drone lying on the road may turn out to be a trap: some such devices detonate when a person or vehicle approaches. This was stated by military expert Yuri Knutov, whose words were cited by Gazeta.ru. In his assessment, this points to a new tactic in the use of so-called 'waiting drones'.
How such devices differ from earlier ones
Knutov explained that previously 'waiting drones' were placed in cover — in grass, in trees or on rooftops — but now they are being left directly on the road, where the likelihood of encountering people is higher. According to him, the drone may be equipped with a motion sensor or a microphone and activate when a person or vehicle appears nearby. Externally, the device may look like an ordinary downed drone, which is what makes it dangerous: the calculation is that someone will approach it — out of curiosity or to remove the obstacle from the road.
Related reports from Kherson region
Life.ru also recalls its earlier report from Kherson region, where, according to the outlet, Ukrainian forces drop explosives packed with hryvnia banknotes. Pavel Filipchuk, head of the Kakhovka district, explained that the coins were used as structural elements of the device and for fragmentation. This information concerns a different type of device and comes from the same sources; the cited publications contain no independent confirmation.
