Detention in North Karelia

The Finnish Border Guard reported that on the afternoon of October 31, two adults were found and detained in the immediate vicinity of the state border in the area of the municipality of Ilomantsi in North Karelia. According to the agency, they had presumably crossed the border outside an official border crossing point. After the detention, both applied for asylum, reports Life.ru.

What is known and what remains unknown

The North Karelia Border District has launched a preliminary investigation on suspicion of violating the state border. At the same time, the nationality of the detainees is not being disclosed; it is also not reported how they reached Finnish territory or exactly where they arrived from.

Context at other border sections

Separately, Life.ru previously reported on a buildup of people at the Russian-Estonian border in Ivangorod, waiting to cross into Estonia: the queues were caused by lengthy checks by Estonian border and customs services. Since September 2026, Estonia has tightened controls — whereas previously enhanced screening applied to those leaving the country, now, according to the Russian agency, everyone crossing the border is checked regardless of direction. Because of this, the Russian side periodically suspends the passage of people, waiting until the Estonian services are able to accept the next group. This is a separate situation at another section of the border and is not directly connected to the detention in Finland.
