The key facts
- Andreas Almgren won the New York City Marathon in his debut over the distance — 2:06:01
- Sheila Chepkirui won the women's race for the second time, with Hellen Obiri finishing third
- The race took place in the year of the 50th anniversary of the marathon's modern format
A Debut Victory
Swede Andreas Almgren won the New York City Marathon, clocking 2 hours 6 minutes 1 second in the first marathon of his career, AFP reports. The 31-year-old runner, who drew attention after setting the European half-marathon record in Copenhagen a month earlier, picked up the pace on the final mile and overtook the Italian Yemaneberhan Crippa — also a specialist in shorter distances.
Chepkirui Again Ahead of Obiri
In the women's race, Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui won for the second time with a time of 2:24:36, holding off last year's champion Hellen Obiri, who ultimately finished third behind the American Jessica McClain. As AFP notes, this is not the first time Chepkirui has denied Obiri back-to-back victories: in 2024 she overtook the then reigning champion on the streets of New York.
An Anniversary Race
The race took place in the year marking the 50th anniversary of the modern format of the New York City Marathon, whose course links the city's five boroughs — Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan. The race was first held in 1970, when the route was confined to Central Park; it became a citywide event in 1976.
