The key facts
- Lazio beat Cagliari 2:1 and claimed their sixth consecutive Serie A win
- They lead Inter by three points; unbeaten Roma are third (24 points)
- Gattuso: the goal is avoiding relegation — 12 more points are needed
Lazio pull clear of the pack at the top
Lazio, coached by Gennaro Gattuso, strengthened their lead in Serie A, beating Cagliari 2:1 and pulling away from Inter, with whom they had started the weekend level on points. The match was not easy: M'Bala Nzola opened the scoring for Cagliari in the 20th minute, but goals from Gustav Isaksen and Andrea Pinamonti in each half gave the Romans their sixth consecutive league win, AFP reports.
Standings and the best start in history
After 10 rounds Lazio have 28 points — three more than Inter, who lost the Milan derby to AC Milan 1:3 on Saturday. Unbeaten Roma sit third with 24 points after thrashing Udinese 5:2. Como returned to fourth place, beating bottom side Venezia 1:0, and trail Roma by one point. The win over Cagliari gave Lazio the best season start in the club's history, which last won the Scudetto in 2000.
Gattuso wary of 'dizziness'
Despite the record, the coach's ambitions remain modest. 'Our goal is to avoid relegation, and we still need 12 points. We need to keep our heads down and work, not look at the table,' Gattuso said, with AFP headlining his words as a warning against 'dizziness' from leading the table. Meanwhile, Lazio's home matches are played before noticeably empty stands at the Olimpico: the ultras continue their boycott in protest against owner and president Claudio Lotito, who is accused of underinvesting in the squad.
Como keep their run going and surprise in the Champions League
Como's win over Venezia was Cesc Fabregas's side's fifth straight success in all competitions. The hosts dominated but scored their only goal from the penalty spot — captain Lucas Da Cunha converted in the 43rd minute, his first goal of the season. 'Last season, matches like this were hard for us to win,' Da Cunha told DAZN. Fabregas called the win important for the team's 'growing-up process'. On Wednesday Como resume their Champions League campaign with a match against Lens: the club, which was playing in the Italian third division as recently as 2021, boast the best result among Serie A clubs in the competition — ninth place in the 36-team table with six points from three matches, including a 4:1 win over Manchester United in the previous round.
