Who made the list

Fodor's Travel has published its Fodor's Finest 2027 list — according to the editors, it features 50 'extraordinary' hotels around the world distinguished not only by their rooms but also by their service, luxury, and connection to the surrounding area. Eleven properties in Europe made the list: Acro Suites Crete on Crete, Airelles La Bastide in Gordes in Provence, Argos in Cappadocia in Uchisar (Turkey), Charlotte Street Hotel in London, Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como, Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo in Monaco, Hotel Pigalle in Gothenburg, Maison Souquet in Paris, Orient Express La Minerva in Rome, Pulitzer Amsterdam, and The Witchery in Edinburgh.

What makes some of the featured hotels notable

Several hotels on the list are described in detail. The Witchery occupies a 16th-century building near the gates of Edinburgh Castle and offers 'total immersion' thanks to rooms with Gothic interiors. Acro Suites Crete, which opened in 2021, combines a luxury resort with a wellness retreat: guests can spend the night in a cave suite with its own pool. The five-star Charlotte Street Hotel in London's Fitzrovia district is designed so that every room has a unique look, and the hotel itself features a library, a drawing room, and a screening room.

How the selection was made

The selection was compiled by Fodor's editors together with hundreds of experts from the hospitality industry. It includes properties across different price categories: hotels with rich histories, design-led urban retreats, and secluded getaways. Since there are only 50 entries, the publication noted that 'every property chosen has earned its place.' According to Fodor's Travel editorial director Jeremy Tarr, 'an extraordinary hotel stay can mean something different to every traveler' — it may be 'an amazing sense of place, unexpectedly high levels of personal service, or a setting that makes you see a destination in a new way.' Speaking about Europe, the publication emphasized that the continent 'has been perfecting the art of hospitality for centuries,' and that what unites the European selection is 'a sense of individuality' — whether the hotel is luxurious or understatedly elegant.
