The key facts

  • On October 30, 2026, CAS ordered the IIHF to admit Russian hockey players to tournaments of the 2026/27 season
  • Hockey Canada requested clarification on Russia's participation in the 2027 World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Red Deer
  • The Czech Ice Hockey Association stated that it does not intend to change its position on excluding Russia

Canada is looking for a way to comply with the CAS ruling

Hockey Canada has approached the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) for clarification following the decision to return Russian national teams to the world stage, Life.ru reports, citing TSN and The Canadian Press. The Canadian side wants to know whether the Russian team will be able to take part in the 2027 World Junior Championship, whose preparation, according to the outlet, is practically complete.

The court ruling and organizational challenges

The reason for the appeal was the verdict of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), issued on Friday, October 30. The court ordered the IIHF to allow Russian hockey players to compete in international events of the 2026/27 season, including the world junior championship. The tournament will be held from December 26, 2026 to January 5, 2027 in the Canadian cities of Edmonton and Red Deer.

The problem for the organizers

The possible addition of another team creates extra difficulties for the organizers: the list of participants has already been set, the match schedule has been approved, and all other preparation matters have been settled. The Canadian federation now has to figure out how to implement the CAS ruling without major changes to the tournament's organization. Hockey Canada confirmed that it is in contact with the IIHF and is awaiting further information. The international federation acknowledged that the arbitration decision is binding, but warned that the return of the Russian team would require a review of a number of organizational issues.

The Czech position

Earlier, according to Life.ru, the Czech Ice Hockey Association spoke out against Russia's return to international tournaments, despite the CAS ruling, and made it clear that it does not intend to change its position. The situation has proven particularly difficult for the organizers of the Women's Under-18 World Championship, which begins on January 8, 2027 in Ostrava: the court verdict also applies to that event. The Czech side will have to work out how to reconcile the requirements of sports arbitration with the restrictions currently in force in the country on the participation of Russian teams.
