Vessel catches fire in the Strait of Hormuz: UKMTO issues warning to mariners

Fire breaks out on a vessel off the coast of Oman

Another incident involving a vessel has been recorded in the Strait of Hormuz. The UK Maritime Trade Operations centre (UKMTO), in advisory No. 187 dated October 30, reported a burning vessel spotted approximately 25 nautical miles (46 km) northeast of the Omani city of Khasab. The information came from a third-party observer. According to the agency, the vessel was heading toward the exit from the strait when a fire was noticed on board; the cause of the blaze remains unknown. This was reported by Life.ru.

Advice to mariners and explosions on the Iranian coast

UKMTO advised other vessels to exercise heightened caution when transiting the area and to report any suspicious activity; the competent authorities will investigate the circumstances. At the same time, according to the Fars news agency, residents of the Iranian coast of the strait near the city of Sirik and Qeshm Island heard several loud explosions coming from the sea, while witnesses on Qeshm saw bright flashes in the sky. Sources suggested the sounds may have been linked to air defense operations; another preliminary version attributes them to warning shots fired at vessels that violated Iran's rules for passage through the strait. Both versions remain unconfirmed, and no connection between the explosions and the burning vessel has been established at this time.

Recent tanker incident

This is not the first emergency in the strait in recent days: on October 22, approximately 13 km from the Omani settlement of Limah, an unidentified projectile struck a tanker. Despite the hit, the crew retained control of the vessel and continued toward the next port of call. Thus, at least two incidents involving vessels have been recorded in the strait area over the past week, with the causes of both still not officially named.
