The key facts

  • Naples Airport is closed to air traffic for the entire month of November for a runway renovation costing around €30 million
  • Some Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling flights have been moved to the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi and Cilento airports
  • Extra Naples — Salerno buses and a trial shared taxi service with fixed fares have been launched

A full month-long closure

Naples Airport, one of the busiest in Italy, will stop accepting flights for the entire month of November — euronews reported this, citing the announcement of the reconstruction. The works will affect the runway and connecting taxiways: the goal is to ensure long-term safety and uninterrupted operation of the infrastructure. The project also includes the replacement and modernization of the airfield lighting systems (AVL) — the lighting of the runway and taxiways needed for aircraft navigation during takeoff, landing and taxiing, especially in poor visibility.

How the works and alternatives are organized

The project is estimated to cost around €30 million. The works are scheduled for a period when there are usually fewer flights than in the high season, and will proceed continuously — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To reduce inconvenience for passengers, some airlines — Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling — will relocate their aircraft to the relatively nearby airports of Salerno Costa d’Amalfi and Cilento. From there, flights will operate to Bergamo, Milan (Malpensa and Linate), Genoa, Turin and Trieste, as well as to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Casablanca, Dubai, Düsseldorf, Madrid, Paris, Sharm El Sheikh and Stuttgart.

Ground transport

For the entire month of November, additional bus routes have been launched between Naples’s Piazza Garibaldi and Salerno Airport, and the number of services to Salerno railway station has been increased; the existing routes to Potenza, Eboli, Battipaglia and the Amalfi Coast remain in place. For those who do not want to use public transport, a shared taxi service with fixed fares has been introduced on a trial basis along two routes: Salerno Airport — Naples central station and Salerno Airport — Salerno central station. The practical takeaway for travelers: in November, arriving in the region will mean flying into Salerno or Cilento and allowing extra time for the overland journey to Naples.
