The key facts

  • The operation in Hebron has been underway since October 23, with raids and tightened restrictions continuing for the eighth day in a row
  • The Hebron municipality reported 4,969 displaced Palestinians from 780 families
  • The Palestinian Prisoners' Society reported 110 detainees in the province since the start of the operation

Eighth day of the operation in Hebron

The Israeli army on Friday continued its military operations in Hebron, in the southern occupied West Bank, for the eighth consecutive day, local sources told the Anadolu Agency. The military carried out raids in the Jilad and Ain Deir Baha neighborhoods, deploying large numbers of soldiers and military equipment. In the Ain Deir Baha area, dozens of Palestinians were ordered to leave their homes.

What is known about the start of the operation

The operation began on October 23 after a shooting near the northwestern entrance to Hebron, in the Farsh al-Hawa area, in which two Israeli soldiers were killed. The army subsequently killed two Palestinians accused of carrying out the attack — Ahmad and Hamouda al-Jaabari — and tightened restrictions in the city. According to local sources, the military brought reinforcements to the al-Jaabari family's homes and searched two houses belonging to the family; the sources said they heard sounds of digging inside, but gave no further details. Anadolu also captured on camera the detention of Palestinians at military checkpoints near the Jilad roundabout, with searches and, in the outlet's wording, mistreatment.

Scale of the consequences

The Hebron municipality reported as early as Tuesday evening that the ongoing military operation had displaced 4,969 Palestinians from 780 families. In the early days of the operation, according to the outlet, forced evictions, the demolition of homes, structures and shops, and the destruction of infrastructure were recorded; Israeli forces converted houses into military barracks and raised Israeli flags over them. The Palestinian Prisoners' Society, for its part, reported that 110 Palestinians had been detained in the province since the start of the operation through Wednesday. Anadolu places these events in the context of the escalation of military operations and violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023. All the figures cited come from Palestinian municipal and public organizations and local sources as reported by Anadolu; the Israeli side is not represented in the publication.
