Record raid and expert assessment
On the night of October 30, Russian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 1,043 Ukrainian drones; airborne targets were shot down over 19 regions of the country — such figures are reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense, as cited by Life.ru. Against the backdrop of this raid, air defense forces historian Yuri Knutov assessed Kyiv's tactics: in his view, the massed drone attacks are aimed not only at overloading Russian air defenses but also at strengthening Ukraine's position ahead of possible negotiations. “This is an attempt to create an illusion of strength ahead of possible diplomatic contacts”, RG.ru quotes the expert. According to him, it is important for Kyiv to demonstrate to its Western partners the ability to strike deep into Russian territory.
Proposals for an asymmetric response
Knutov noted that Russian air defenses have learned to effectively repel mass raids, but the problem cannot be considered fully solved: Ukrainian forces are aided by Western intelligence data that makes it possible to track changes in the deployment of air defense assets. The response, in his opinion, should be asymmetric — in addition to intercepting drones, it is necessary to limit their production and supply capabilities. He linked a significant portion of Ukraine's industrial base to foreign enterprises, and attached particular importance to the development of laser, electronic and electromagnetic means of countering drones. These assessments belong to the expert himself; the publications contain no independent confirmation of the conclusions about the motives for the attacks.
