The key facts

  • Three popular cruise routes to the markets — along the Main, the Danube and the Rhine
  • The Main route includes Germany's largest market in Nuremberg
  • The Rhine cruise passes through four countries: the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland

Three rivers — three formats for a festive journey

River cruises make it possible to visit several Christmas markets in a single trip, without being limited to just one city. Euronews highlights three especially popular routes in Europe — along the Main, the Danube and the Rhine, and examines the offerings of specific cruise companies for the 2026 season. The outlet has previously covered markets reachable by train, as well as classic and lesser-known markets according to travelers.

The Main: the classic experience in Germany

Christmas markets (Christkindlmarkt) first appeared in Germany, so for a classic experience Euronews recommends the Main route. Uniworld operates cruises between Nuremberg and Frankfurt: the journey begins at Germany's largest Christmas market in Nuremberg, followed by Bamberg, Rothenburg and Würzburg, the market of 'twinkling stars' in Wiesbaden, with Frankfurt as the final destination.

The Danube: several countries in one cruise

For those who want to see a German market and not limit themselves to a single country, the Danube is a good fit, with stops in Austria and Hungary. AmaWaterways' package includes five markets: Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau in Germany, plus Vienna and Budapest. Scenic Cruises offers a similar option with a different route structure: it starts in Prague, from where travelers are taken by bus to Budapest, followed by Bratislava, Vienna, Dürnstein, Melk and Passau, with the trip ending in Regensburg.

The Rhine: four countries

The widest geographic coverage is offered by the Rhine: the Avalon Waterways cruise departs from Amsterdam, passing through Cologne, Rüdesheim, Mainz and Heidelberg in Germany, Strasbourg in France, Breisach in the Black Forest, and ends in Basel, Switzerland. Viking River Cruises also offers a Christmas cruise along the Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel, but with a different set of stops: Dordrecht, Cologne, Koblenz, Rüdesheim, Mannheim, Speyer, Strasbourg and Breisach.
