Large units next to small reactors
Construction of two large power units of the nuclear power plant in Jizzakh region may begin in 2027. This was reported by the Dunyo news agency, citing the World Nuclear News portal, and Kun.uz later published the same information. According to Rosatom, the units with VVER-1000 reactors will be located next to the small modular reactors. Engineering and survey work is currently underway at the site, and the project is being refined.
What has already been done at the site
Construction of the plant itself is proceeding in parallel: two small modular reactors are being built at the site. The first concrete foundation slab was poured in May 2026, and work related to it is expected to be completed by the end of the year. In parallel, equipment with long lead times is being manufactured: the reactor vessel for one of the small power units is already ready. Recruitment of operating personnel for the first small unit is scheduled for late 2027. According to the publication, Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev called the project the world's only small nuclear power plant under construction using an export model.
Personnel and the 'atomic town'
More than a thousand people are working at the construction site, and their number is planned to be increased at least twofold in the coming months. Most of the general construction work is expected to be handed over to Uzbek companies. An 'atomic town' is planned to be built next to the plant, with its first phase designed for 33,000 residents: it will include energy-efficient housing, educational, medical and sports facilities. According to Kun.uz, the meeting between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the head of Rosatom also discussed training personnel for the nuclear power industry and cooperation in housing construction.
