The key facts
- Musk warned that destroying Starlink satellites could trigger a 'domino effect' and render space unusable
- He allows the system to be used for military infrastructure but opposes offensive operations
- Earlier, Zelensky announced the restoration of Ukraine's access to Starlink and Starshield as of October 24
Musk's warning about a chain reaction in orbit
American entrepreneur Elon Musk warned that an attack on Starlink satellites could lead to the creation of a large amount of space debris and jeopardize the use of near-Earth space. The head of SpaceX wrote about this on the social network X, explaining the need to preserve the civilian status of the satellite system, reports Life.ru.
The 'domino effect' and legitimate military targets
“If an adversary were to blow up Starlink satellites, it would lead to a destructive domino effectthat would create a vast debris field rendering space unusable,” Musk said. In this way he was responding to a post whose author discussed the risks of possible strikes. In the entrepreneur's view, destroying the satellites could trigger a chain reaction and pose a threat to other objects in orbit. According to him, it was precisely this danger that was one of the main reasons why Starlink must retain its civilian purpose. At the same time, he allows the satellite system to be used to support military infrastructure, but opposes employing Starlink in offensive operations: such use could make the satellites a legitimate military target and provoke retaliatory strikes.
Context: restoration of access for Ukraine
The statement came amid reports of the restoration of Ukraine's access to the Starlink and Starshield systems. As Volodymyr Zelensky announced, Washington lifted restrictions on the operation of satellite communications after talks with the American side in Oslo. According to him, as of October 24 the equipment can once again maintain a connection while moving at speeds of up to 420 kilometers per hour instead of the previous 160. In addition, Zelensky said the full exchange of intelligence data, including warnings about ballistic missile launches, has resumed. In his assessment, Kyiv managed to settle two of the three disputed issues in its relations with the United States, but the problem of supplying interceptor missiles for Ukrainian air defense systems remains unresolved.
The significance of the situation
Musk's statement concerns not only Starlink: by his logic, a strike on a large satellite constellation would create debris threatening all objects in orbit, which also affects other states and operators of space infrastructure. For Ukraine, the practical significance lies in the restored access to Starlink and Starshield — as of October 24, communications work at speeds of up to 420 km/h, and the exchange of intelligence data, including warnings about ballistic missile launches, has resumed. At the same time, the issue of interceptor missile supplies, according to Zelensky, remains open, and the future performance of Ukrainian air defense may depend on its resolution.
