The key facts
- The Iranian army announced the destruction of a US LUCAS drone over Bandar Abbas
- The incident occurred against the backdrop of Trump's statements about a possible strike on Iran
- Tehran had previously also reported intercepts of MQ-9 and MQ-1 drones
Statement by the Iranian military
On Sunday, October 25, the Iranian army announced the destruction of an American LUCAS attack drone over the port city of Bandar Abbas in the south of the country. This was reported by the Tasnim news agency, citing the press service of the military ministry. According to the agency, the drone was hit by 'fire from Air Defense Force systems as part of the country's unified national air defense network' (Anadolu). Life.ru specifies that after being hit, the drone, according to Tehran, was destroyed.
Context: the area and the type of aircraft
Bandar Abbas is located on the coast of the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman, and is one of Iran's most important port cities. It is in this area that Tehran has previously repeatedly reported intercepts of American drones, notes Life.ru. The LUCAS itself is an American expendable attack drone: in December 2025, the US Armed Forces Central Command announced the deployment of a unit of such drones in the Middle East, presenting them at the Pentagon as relatively inexpensive systems capable of operating autonomously and being launched from various platforms.
Previous incidents and the backdrop of tension
This is not Tehran's first such statement in recent weeks. On October 20, Iran reported the destruction of an American MQ-9 over the Strait of Hormuz — at the time, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed responsibility for the intercept. Before that, on September 8, the Iranian army said it had downed an MQ-1 drone which, according to Tehran, had violated the country's airspace. The statement about the downed LUCAS came after US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Washington could strike Iran as early as Sunday or reach a 'big, beautiful' deal with Tehran — against the backdrop of reports that he was considering resuming attacks. According to Anadolu, the war between the US and Iran began with American-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February and grew into a broader regional conflict that remains unresolved despite the ceasefire and the agreement to finalize a peace deal. No confirmation of the incident from the US side is provided in the publications.
Why it matters
The incident is taking place in the area of the Strait of Hormuz — a key artery for global trade through which a significant share of the world's oil supplies passes — and at a moment when, according to Trump, a strike on Iran could have been carried out as early as Sunday. Tehran's series of statements about downed American drones (MQ-1, MQ-9, LUCAS) over several weeks points to a steady escalation of military activity in the region, which directly affects risks to shipping and to countries dependent on supplies through the strait. In practical terms, this means a high likelihood of new incidents in the strait zone and the continuation of military incidents, as long as the peace agreement has not been finalized.
