Resignation Over a Lapse in Judgement

Chief of Defence Force of New Zealand Air Marshal Tony Davis resigned on Friday, admitting to an 'inappropriate relationship'. According to the Anadolu agency, citing an official statement, Davis said he was stepping down 'for personal reasons' due to 'lapses in judgement' he made in the past, for which he takes responsibility. According to him, these lapses contradicted the values of the Defence Force.

Admission About a Past Command Period

Davis clarified that the matter concerns an 'inappropriate relationship' he had while serving as a unit commander. He expressed regret that he had not disclosed this information when he had the opportunity to do so. The matter has been referred to the Inspector-General of Defence for consideration.

Defence Minister's Reaction and Handover of Duties

New Zealand's Defence Minister Paul Goldsmith confirmed Davis's departure and, according to Radio New Zealand, said he recommends that Governor-General Cindy Kiro accept the resignation. 'The reasons for his decision relate to matters of integrity that he had not previously disclosed. We both agree that his position is no longer tenable,' Goldsmith said. The New Zealand Defence Force is arranging the handover of duties to Vice Chief of Defence Force Rear Admiral Matt Williams, who will become acting Chief of Defence Force.
