SVO October 21: Russian Armed Forces took Tymoshevka, fighting for Druzhkovka, strike on the Northern Bridge in Kyiv, talks in Norway

The key facts

  • The Russian Armed Forces took Tymoshevka under control; fighting is underway near Korenek, Turya, in the areas of Khotenya and Velikaya Rybitsa; per the Sever grouping, Ukrainian forces lost more than 170 personnel in a day.
  • War correspondent Kukushkin reports fighting on the southern outskirts of Druzhkovka, where Ukrainian forces built an underground network of communications; strikes with UMPK-guided glide bombs aim at cutting logistics.
  • Zelensky met with Witkoff and Kushner in Norway and declared readiness for a trilateral meeting; Peskov stressed the need for a legitimate representative of Kyiv.

Advance of the Sever grouping

The Sever grouping is expanding the buffer zone on the border with the Bryansk and Kursk regions. Russian troops are advancing near the village of Korenek, where, according to the publication, the 104th Brigade of Ukraine's Territorial Defense is holding the defense. In the Belgorod region, fighting is underway in the area of Turya; clashes continue in the areas of Khotenya and Velikaya Rybitsa. Over the past day, according to a report from the Sever grouping, Ukrainian units lost more than 170 personnel, as well as a mortar, EW stations Damba, vehicles, UAVs and NRTC. The day before, near the village of Marchishina Buda, a Bogdana self-propelled gun, which the enemy used to attack the advancing units of the grouping, was destroyed with FPV drones.

Tymoshevka and the direction toward Orikhiv

The Russian army took Tymoshevka under control: soldiers of the 114th Regiment of the 127th Division of the Russian Armed Forces broke the resistance of the 225th Assault Regiment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. War correspondent Alexander Kots reports that the Vostok (East) grouping is expanding its control zone north of Orikhiv, which he calls the main fortified area of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Zaporizhzhia region; in his view, the liberation of the city will open the road to Zaporizhzhia.

Zolotoy Kolodez and the fighting for Druzhkovka

The Russian Armed Forces continue clearing Zolotoy Kolodez. Analyst Anatoly Radov reports that the settlement has been taken in a pincer, while the DIVGEN channel claims the village is fully under the control of the Russian army. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry had announced the liberation of Zolotoy Kolodez back on September 18. War correspondent Pavel Kukushkin spoke about the fighting for Druzhkovka: according to his information, Russian troops are fighting on the southern outskirts of the city, and the advance is complicated by an underground network of communications created by the enemy. Assault troops are assisted by military pilots operating glide bombs with UMPK kits. This type of weapon allows us to penetrate these underground passages in such a way as to deprive the garrison in Druzhkovka of the main thing — logistics. Having completely cut off their logistics, liberating Druzhkovka further will be a matter of technique, Kukushkin explained.

Strike on the Northern Bridge in Kyiv

The Russian army struck the Northern (Moscow) Bridge in Kyiv — a cable-stayed structure across the Dnieper connecting several districts of the capital; the bridge had been attacked before. Alexander Kots noted that completely destroying large Kyiv bridges with single UAV strikes is extremely difficult, but regular precise strikes on the same transport hubs may in the long run render the crossing unfit for normal operation. According to some reports, the target may not have been the bridge itself, but an anti-aircraft missile system or mobile fire groups covering the overpass. In favor of this version is the report by the Kyiv City State Administration that the Northern Bridge was not damaged, but there was a hit nearby; a large number of ambulances arrived at the impact site.

Talks: meeting in Norway and statements by the parties

Volodymyr Zelensky met in Norway with representatives of the US president, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner; the peaceful settlement in Ukraine was discussed. According to the publication, the tone for the talks was set by Donald Trump, who harshly criticized Zelensky: Zelensky is a man who should have settled this war a long time ago. If he had listened to me, he would have concluded a much better deal a very long time ago and millions of people on his side would have remained alive. After the meeting, Zelensky said he was ready for a trilateral meeting at the level of heads of state: Kyiv allegedly has a specific plan for achieving peace, which it wants to hand over to Russia; Ukraine, according to him, was offered security guarantees. According to The New York Times, American negotiators will soon hold a meeting with Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg. In Moscow, meanwhile, they emphasize that the agreement with the Russian Federation must be signed by a legitimate leader of Ukraine. It is important to us that this be a legitimate representative of the government, ready to take on responsibility and make the necessary decision to end this war, said the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov.
