The key facts

  • In the 2027 season, the maximum F1 race distance will be reduced from 305 to 290 km (−15 km).
  • The reduction is linked to the fuel consumption of the new hybrid power units with an almost equal power split between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor.
  • By 2028, the balance will shift to 60% ICE and 40% electric, and the distance will return to 305 km.

Temporary distance reduction

Formula 1 grands prix will return to the standard maximum distance of 305 km (189.5 miles) in 2028 after the limit is reduced in the 2027 season, BBC Sport reported on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. According to the outlet, next season the maximum race distance will be cut by 15 km — from 305 to 290 km (180.2 miles).

The reason — new power units

The reduction is linked to fuel consumption when using the new hybrid power units introduced this year, in which power is split almost equally between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor. According to the plan, the power balance will change in two stages and by 2028 will reach a ratio of 60% internal combustion engine and 40% electric power, which will allow drivers to use maximum power for longer.

Risks for the teams

The increased fuel consumption could create problems for teams that, as part of cost-saving measures, plan to carry over their existing chassis to the 2027 season, BBC Sport notes.
