Statement by the Yemeni army
The Yemeni army said on Tuesday that over the past 24 hours it had carried out 744 precision attacks against the Houthi group and 'neutralized' about 200 of its fighters. According to the statement, the offensive continues as part of 'Operation Yemeni Dawn.' The term 'neutralized' means putting combatants out of action, including through death or injury.
Course and nature of the operations
According to the statement, the strikes involved combat aircraft, drones, field artillery, multiple rocket launchers and sniper units. The targets were said to include field command and control centers, firing positions, fortified facilities, reserve staging areas, Houthi reinforcements and supply assets. The army also reported the destruction or damage of 90 vehicles and other military equipment.
Fronts in Taiz
In the southwestern province of Taiz, according to the army, forces continued to build up military pressure and push back Houthi fighters. Operations on the eastern, southern and western fronts, it is claimed, maintained a 'synchronized operational tempo,' restricting the movement of Houthi reserves and preventing the group from making territorial gains.
Context
No comment has come from the Houthis. The escalation in fighting comes against the backdrop of rising tensions between the Houthis and forces supporting Yemen's internationally recognized government, which are backed by the Saudi Arabia-led coalition. Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and most of the country's north.
