The mission's statement reads: 'UNIFIL remains committed to supporting peace and stability in the region through its mandated tasks under resolution 1701.'

Mission tasks

According to the statement, UNIFIL's tasks include monitoring the situation, reporting violations to the UN Security Council, engaging with the parties, supporting the Lebanese armed forces and facilitating humanitarian missions. History and end date

UNIFIL was established in 1978 following Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon. The mission's mandate was significantly expanded after the July 2006 war under Security Council resolution 1701. In August 2025, the UN Security Council decided to end UNIFIL's mandate on 31 December 2026, after which a gradual, safe and coordinated withdrawal of forces over a year is expected.
