Record Precipitation and State of Emergency

Six monthly norms of precipitation fell on Mount Ai-Petri in Crimea over three days, Life.ru reports. In the Yalta district, 509 millimeters of precipitation has been recorded since the storm warning began on October 17 — an all-time record. A municipal-level state of emergency is in effect in Yalta. According to the regional branch of the Emergencies Ministry, on October 20 rescuers expected the water level of local rivers to continue rising.

Flooding and Closed Roads

Heavy downpours caused rivers to overflow and residential houses to be flooded. The situation was especially tense near the Southern Coast Highway: due to the overflowing Guva River, traffic had to be closed. Rescuers are clearing riverbeds of rocks and soil, reinforcing banks with sandbags, and building protective dams from concrete slabs upstream. More than 200 people and over 35 units of equipment have been deployed to deal with the aftermath of the bad weather.

Crocodile Enclosure Battles the Water

Water has penetrated the grounds of the Yalta crocodile enclosure. According to the facility's administration, nine pumps and one high-capacity pump have been operating for two days now. It has not yet been possible to completely stop the inflow of water, but its level is being kept no higher than 50 centimeters. All the animals are safe, the regional branch of the Emergencies Ministry reported.

Evacuation in Koreiz and Rescue of a Child

Earlier, the outlet reported that record downpours in Yalta had begun to destroy retaining walls and the foundations of residential buildings. The most difficult situation developed in the village of Koreiz, where the Uzen-Cheshme River burst its banks. Rescuers evacuated seven residents, including a child; three were placed in a temporary accommodation center. In Koreiz, Emergencies Ministry personnel pulled a girl out of a powerful stream of water, setting up a rope crossing for the operation; footage of the rescue was captured on video. In Sudak, according to the outlet, the basement floor of a Krymgazseti building and the basements of private homes were flooded.

In Crimea, evacuation routes have been prepared for residents of Koreiz due to heavy rains
