The key facts
- New BRT sections: Mukimi (4.6 km), Karatash and Kukcha Darvoza (4.2 km), Parkent (2.8 km), Mirzo Ulugbek avenue (6.3 km) — 17.9 km in total
- Design documentation will preliminarily require about 6.5 billion soums at the expense of the Tashkent City Development Fund
- The customer is 'Toshkent invest kompaniyasi'; previously a tram ran along these streets, closed in May 2016
Plans for new BRT lines
The Tashkent city administration (hokimiyat) declared the continuation of its policy of raising the priority of public transport and de-automobilization. As part of this policy, the construction of dedicated bus lanes in the center of streets (BRT-style) is planned on four more sections with a total length of 17.9 km. According to Kun.uz, the decision was made on the basis of an order of the mayor of the capital, and the sections are distributed across districts: Mukimi street — 4.6 km in the Yashnabad and Chilanzar districts; Karatash and Kukcha Darvoza streets — 4.2 km in the Shaykhantahur district; Parkent street — 2.8 km in the Mirzo Ulugbek district; Mirzo Ulugbek avenue — 6.3 km in the Mirzo Ulugbek district.
How the sections were selected
According to the hokimiyat, specialists analyzed street sections served by public transport routes with a total length of more than 150 km and selected the indicated segments. It is noted that a tram previously ran along these sections — it was closed in early May 2016. 'The main goal of the project is to make public transport fast, comfortable, safe and accessible, so that a bus ride becomes an attractive alternative to a personal car,' the administration's statement says, referring to the strategy of the Road Traffic Organization Center.
Financing and work organization
The decision of the mayor of the capital has already been signed; the budget for developing the design documentation is currently being formed. According to preliminary estimates, about 6.5 billion soums will be required for these purposes; the expenses are planned to be covered by funds from the Tashkent City Development Fund. The customer of the projects will be 'Toshkent invest kompaniyasi' (Kun.uz clarifies that it is a JSC). Design organizations, contractors and technical supervision organizations will be selected on a competitive basis in accordance with the procedure established by legislation.
Preparation and project requirements
Before construction work begins, engineering utilities and communal infrastructure networks will be surveyed; if faults are detected, the networks will be repaired, relocated or replaced. Kun.uz also notes that the work includes measures to ensure road safety and prevent traffic jams. The project requirements include convenient pedestrian routes, quality road signs, bus stop complexes and lighting. Special attention will be paid to the road surface: it is planned to use polymer-gravel-mastic asphalt concrete (PGMA) with polymer-modified bitumen and durable crushed stone from rocks — this surface has been used in the capital since 2023. The hokimiyat promised to 'openly inform residents about the planned changes and every stage of the project'.
Current BRT construction
Currently, a BRT line is being built along Shakhrisabz street (3.2 km) — it is a continuation of the line along Shota Rustaveli street (6.5 km). In the future, it will extend along Amir Temur avenue (7.6 km) and Yangi Sergeli street (5.5 km). The hokimiyat presented this project in April.
