Homemade synthetic drugs deepen the US drug crisis
BBC correspondent Quentin Sommerville reports from Ohio and Illinois: the US drug market is increasingly filled with synthetic substances — fentanyl, xylazine, medetomidine and synthetic cannabinoids, mixed in basements and bathrooms. Overdose deaths have fallen from the 2022 peak (110,000) to about 70,000 last year, but the crisis is changing shape: stimulants are laced with opioids, naloxone does not work against new sedative substances, and in Cook County jail drugs are delivered in paper.
