Scientists record industrial-level vapor concentrations in nail salons
Researchers at the City University of New York measured the air in five beauty salons over the course of a year and found peak concentrations of volatile organic compounds comparable to those at chemical plants. The air contained acetone, ethyl acetate and traces of benzene; ordinary masks, the authors conclude, do not protect against such substances.
