US national debt grew by nearly $400 billion in two months and approached $40.4 trillion
According to the US Treasury Department, on October 19, 2026, the national debt reached $40.396 trillion — almost $400 billion more than when the $40 trillion mark was first crossed on August 19. Growth since late August was about 1%. Analysts suggest the debt could exceed $50 trillion by 2030, and the Congressional Budget Office projects a further increase in the debt burden by 2036.
