CNN: Internal State Department assessments call crime levels in several Latin American countries comparable to some US cities
According to CNN, the US State Department has provided asylum officers with internal assessments comparing crime in Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador with the situation in American cities such as Baltimore, Houston and Memphis. The documents pay less attention to human rights abuses, kidnappings and extortion than previous assessments. Experts note a shift in emphasis; the asylum denial rate in June reached 94%.
