Scientists explain why there are more ginger tomcats than ginger female cats
Ginger coat color in cats is linked to the X chromosome and the ARHGAP36 gene. A tomcat needs only one 'ginger' variant from his mother, while a female cat needs both — from her mother and father. Yuri Muretov, head of the small companion animal clinic at SPbGUVM, also explained tortoiseshell coloring, cream cats, and 'freckles' on the face.
