Scientists show that vessel cells in atherosclerosis change specialization differently in males and females
Cardiologists from Chongqing University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University found that in atherosclerosis, mouse endothelial cells change their profile: in females, smooth muscle-like and connective tissue cells appear more often, while in males, macrophage-like cells that support inflammation predominate. The role of hormones was confirmed in a menopause model. The work was published in Communications Biology.
