Poland's Sejm passes abortion-relaxation bills, but the law remains among the strictest in the EU
On October 20, Poland's Sejm approved amendments to the Criminal Code exempting medical professionals from criminal liability in cases of medically necessary abortion, and a bill restoring termination of pregnancy in cases of severe fetal defects. The fate of the laws is unclear: a veto by President Nawrocki is likely. Even if they take effect, abortion on demand up to 12 weeks will remain banned — Poland will keep its status as one of the two most restrictive countries in the EU, along with Malta.
