Scientists show: Istanbul and Ankara were more central than Rome in the empire's road network
An international study of the Roman road network, published in Nature Communications, showed that Byzantium (modern Istanbul) and Ancyra (Ankara) held more central positions than the empire's capital itself. The work covered about 299,000 km of ancient roads and their influence on modern transport routes.
