UK introduces new rules for private parking: protecting drivers from 'rip-off' fines
The UK government has announced new rules for private parking: a guaranteed five minutes to decide on parking, 10 minutes to exit without a fine, cancellation of fines for breakdowns and honest mistakes, a maximum of £20 on appeal, and a freeze of the upper fine limit at £100. Operators who violate the rules risk losing access to DVLA data. According to the RAC, a record 17 million private parking fines were issued in 2025/2026.
