Wildfire smoke during pregnancy linked to increased risk of autism in children
A large observational study in the United States showed that an increase in the concentration of fine particulate matter from wildfires during pregnancy was associated with an approximately 30% higher risk of an autism diagnosis. The strongest association was recorded in the second and third trimesters. The authors stress that a causal relationship cannot yet be claimed.
