UK unemployment falls to 4.7%, but vacancies shrink as hiring becomes expensive
According to the UK's Office for National Statistics, unemployment fell to 4.7% in June–August — the lowest in more than a year — while the employment rate rose to 75.3%. At the same time, vacancies dropped to 691,000, the lowest level in more than five years: small companies cite rising labour costs. The data is the last official snapshot of the labour market before the budget.
