UK companies advised to publish salaries in job ads before law is passed
The UK government has urged businesses to include salary information in job advertisements immediately, without waiting for mandatory legislation. A summer consultation revealed 94% support for greater pay transparency, though the industry body CIPD warns that regulating job ads may not suit all employers. The proposed law aims to help job seekers, particularly those seeking their first job, and prevent pay discrimination. Similar measures are being implemented in the EU, requiring employers to disclose starting pay or salary ranges either in the ad or before interviews. While some employers already practice transparency, others argue that fixed salaries do not always exist and that pay should reflect skills and experience. The equality regulator EHRC also supports employees' right to know colleagues' salaries and has proposed banning employers from asking about current pay during hiring to prevent perpetuating discrimination.
