Frank-Walter Steinmeier has served two terms and cannot run again. The right to nominate a candidate belongs to Chancellor Friedrich Merz's CDU; among the likely figures are Ilse Aigner (CSU), Julia Klöckner, and others. The election will take place by January 30, 2027, with the inauguration on March 19, 2027.
