Senegal hosts the first Youth Olympic Games in Africa

Dakar and its suburbs are hosting the first Youth Olympic Games on the African continent: around 2,700 athletes aged 15–17 from various countries, 25 sports and 153 events. The Games are being held for the first time with full gender parity and with a refugee team, but are accompanied by criticism over LGBT laws and questions about their cost.

Syria restricts women's access to new defense and security universities

In October 2026, Syria's ministry of education introduced admission rules under which a number of programs at the National University of Defense Sciences are open only to men, and at the University of Security Sciences — almost all of them. Human Rights Watch called this a violation of international obligations. The rules also affect other educational institutions.
