EU and Russia dispute the amount of energy payments: $209 billion vs $320.7 billion
The European Commission disputed the statement by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak that the EU has purchased $320.7 billion worth of Russian energy resources since 2022. According to Eurostat data (COMEXT), payments from March 2022 to July 2026 amounted to €197 billion ($209 billion). US President Donald Trump cited his own figure — $250 billion. The discrepancies reflect competing narratives about the EU's dependence on Russian energy.
