Paying residents of the Peruvian Amazon $3 a day helped protect forests — study
A two-year experiment by the British charity Cool Earth in the Peruvian Asháninka region showed that daily payments to local residents of about $3 contribute to tropical forest protection. About 90% of participants adopted conservation practices, the share of households without adequate nutrition fell from 73% to 26%, and forced labor migration fell from 43% to 18%.
