Detention in Tallinn and the death of a 21-year-old Pakistani citizen

In Tallinn, police detained eight illegal migrants after one of their companions — a 21-year-old citizen of Pakistan — died. This was reported by the Estonian outlet Postimees, citing the police; the incident was also covered by Life.ru. The incident occurred on November 7 in an apartment on Tehnika Street: the foreigners who were there called an ambulance for one of their companions, but the medics who arrived pronounced the young man dead.

What is known about the group's route

The police who arrived established that the group had entered Estonia from Latvia. According to the detainees, during the night the car carrying them went off the road and crashed, after which the migrants continued on their way to Tallinn. “According to them, last night in Latvia they were involved in a traffic accident — the car carrying them went off the road. We are now finding out how they got to Estonia and under what circumstances one of them died,” said Inna Toater, head of the police prefecture.

Injuries among three detainees and open questions

During the check, three of the men were found to have injuries and were taken to a hospital for further examination; the other members of the group were detained. According to Postimees, the foreigners came from Afghanistan, Morocco and Ethiopia, and they had no legal grounds to stay in Estonia. The police continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident, the group's route and the cause of the Pakistani citizen's death. It is not yet known whether the young man died as a result of the traffic accident or later — this is the key open question of the investigation, on which both the assessment of the events in Latvia and the version of what happened in the apartment itself depend.
