What happened in Glasgow
On Saturday evening, a mass street brawl broke out outside the Ovo Hydro arena in Glasgow, where a Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) event was taking place. BBC News reportsthat, according to police, at around 23:10 reports came in of a major disturbance on Congress Road near the venue. Video circulating on social media showed a group of men fighting in the street; fighting young men were also seen on the Clyde Arc bridge. More than 20 police vehicles and a police helicopter were sent to the scene.
Arrests and injuries
Police Scotland said two men aged 32 and 27 had been arrested. They have been charged with offences including assault, obstructing police work, and threatening and abusive behaviour; they are expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday. A third detainee received an official police warning. Three police officers were injured while responding to the disturbance, two of whom required medical treatment. Chief Inspector Paul Daly described violence against officers as unacceptable and noted that, by sheer luck, none of them suffered serious injuries. The investigation is ongoing; police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them.
Context of the event
Earlier that evening, thousands of spectators had gathered for the BKFC event. In the main bout, Sean Weir of Wishaw defeated Lee Koohoon of Manchester: the referee stopped the fight in the first round. The event itself took place inside the arena; the disturbance erupted outside after it ended.
